Petition support Power 95
in support yesterday of the new Power 95 radio music station.
They were concerned the dozens of letters written to The Royal Gazette by fans of the old FM95 golden-oldie station will convince ZBM to take Power 95 off the air.
"Everyday we read letters complaining about the new Power 95 and say to ourselves that people who like the change should make themselves known before we lose the station. So here we go!'' wrote Ms Tamara Malpas and her friend Ms Vanessa Persad in a letter to the newspaper.
Opposers of the new station have called the music it plays "noisy'' and "nerve-racking'', compared to the "soothing'' sounds of the old FM95 station.
The two young women typed up a letter and sent copies to their friends and to businesses around Hamilton all last week urging those who support Power 95 to sign it.
They had gotten more than 200 signatures by the time they sent the letter off to The Royal Gazette on Monday. And this week, they received a further 100.
"We feel that this new station is a reflection of the times,'' they wrote.
"Music has and is always changing and in order to survive, ZBM must acknowledge these changes. While we sympathise with the easy listening audience who preferred FM95, they must also sympathise with ZBM trying to profit.'' The two women went on to say it is "obvious'' the old FM95 could not support itself.
Power 95 DJ Mr. Glenn Blakeney said yesterday the station does not only play "thumpa-thumpa scream `n' holla'' music -- as one opposer described it.
He said the music is, in fact, "a music smorgasbord of mass appeal'', which includes an "urban contemporary'' mix of reggae, soca, some jazz, some pop and some rap.
