Police are reminding the public not to leave bags and valuables unattended in their vehicles after thieves struck twice over the weekend, smashing car windows and in one instance making off with a handbag.

At around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, Police were called to North Street, outside Dellwood School, where a 55-year-old Paget man who was attending church returned to discover someone had smashed his car window, scattering glass across the car's back seat.

Police believe the thief was after a bag of books sitting on the front passenger floor but was disturbed and ran off leaving the bag behind.

Then at around 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon a 39-year-old Paget woman, who parked her car on Ferry Reach Road and went for a walk, returned to discover someone had smashed in her car window and removed a handbag she had covered with towels.

Anyone who may have witnessed either incident is asked to call Police at 295-0011.

MAN ARRESTED AT HOTEL CRM Man arrested at hotel A 35-year-old Southampton man was arrested early on Sunday after he tried to break into a liquor storage room at a Paget hotel with a pickaxe.

Shortly after 4 a.m., patrolling Police officers discovered the man trying to force entry into the Harmony Hall Hotel's liquor store.

As the officers approached, the would-be thief attempted to escape on a motorcycle but was taken into custody after a struggle.

STERRER TOLECTURE SCI Sterrer to lecture One of Bermuda's most renowned scientists will give a lecture at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research this week.

Bermuda National History Museum curator and former BBSR director Wolfgang Sterrer will address the importance of preserving and maintaining Bermuda's fauna and flora.

Dr. Sterrer's lecture entitled "Who Needs All That Wildlife'' is scheduled for tomorrow at 7.30 p.m. Admission is $5 with proceeds to go toward environmental research.
