Miss Derika Bean was yesterday lying in her hospital bed, recovering from the accident which also injured her colleague and fellow rookie, Miss Marlo Smith, who was on parade yesterday, with her arm in a sling.

It was the 50th Basic Training Course to be completed by the Bermuda Police Service and to celebrate the occasion, members of the first course in 1962 lined up beside their young successors.

The ceremony was held at the Police Headquarters in front of senior officers, and the families and friends of the Constables.

Mr. Pearman paid tribute to the Police Service and its new direction under Mr.

Coxall's planned wide-ranging changes.

He added: "There is one member short in your team as a result of an unfortunate accident. We all send our best wishes and hope she has a speedy recovery.'' The most coveted award, the Baton of Honour for the best all-round student, was awarded to W.P.c. Charlene Thompson.

The Instructor's Cup, for the best time over a 10k run, went to P.c.

Quennel Robinson, the Academic Prize went to P.c. Francis Vazquez and the Commissioner's Shield for the best group within the team, was awarded to W.P.c. Bean, P.c. Vazquez and P.c. Michael Brangman.
