Police found the body of 28-year-old Miss Antja Herkommer at an old gun battery near the Commissioners' House at about 4:30 p.m.. Police would not say how they believe the woman was killed.

Large numbers of Police descended on the Maritime Museum after the body was discovered. The area was sealed off, and the body was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for identification and examination.

Police said the Maritime Museum will be closed until further notice.

Det. Chief Inspector Victor Richmond is heading the team of detectives in the murder investigation, and Police are appealing to anybody who saw the woman on Thursday or Friday from help.

A party of about 12 officers had been searching the Dockyard area for the woman, who was reported missing Thursday night.

The woman failed to meet her sister, Bermuda resident Miss Christine Herkommer, at 5 p.m. in front of a jewellery store on Front Street as planned.

The missing woman planned to tour the Dockyard area earlier that day.

A woman who answered the telephone at Miss Herkommer's sister's house on Pitt's Bay Road last night said she was not available for comment.

Miss Herkommer was last seen by her sister at 8.45 a.m. Thursday. At 8.45 p.m.

Police declared her missing. A formal search involving 12 men started early yesterday afternoon.

Sgt. John Dale of the Police Community Relations Office said Miss Herkommer spoke fluent English but was "very shy''. He said she had no friends on the Island other than her sister.

"She informed her sister she was going to Dockyard and probably was to travel on the ferry from Albuoy's Point,'' he said. "She did not have a cycle and would travel on public transport.

"We appeal to any member of the public who may have seen Miss Herkommer on Thursday or Friday -- particularly in the Dockyard or Maritime Museum area -- to come forward and contact the Incident Room at Police Headquarters. The telephone number is 299-4292.'' Miss Herkommer was described as a white female, five-foot three-inches tall, with shoulder-length, dark brown hair. She weighed approximately 112 pounds, had pierced ears and wore blue, thick rimmed spectacles without which she had difficulty in seeing. She wore a watch on her left wrist and a ring on each hand.

Sgt. Dale said there was no link between Miss Herkommer's disappearance and that of four-year-old Chaona Woolridge.

Chaona, who has Down's syndrome, went missing from her Cove Valley Drive, St.

David's home April 5.

Her parents were upstairs dressing for church at the time the three-foot five-inch tall, light brown skinned girl disappeared. She was last seen wearing a pale pink dress with a white print pattern, white stockings and black shoes.

So far, an extensive search of the area only turned up what are believed to be Chaona's shoes.

Sgt. Dale said officers are continuing investigations into Chaona's disappearance.
