Police said they were trying to arrest a 25-year-old Pembroke man when he began head butting, biting and shouting obscenities.

At one point he got away but was captured again, said Police spokesman Insp.

Coghlin Gibbons.

"A large crowd, very hostile to the Police, began to gather as the man tried to escape again,'' he added. "The crowd tried to obstruct the Police by shoving them.'' Insp. Gibbons said the 19 officers were called in to restrain the crowd.
