And last night Police warned pub and club staff to beware of people attempting to pass counterfeit bills in their premises.

The notes were spotted by bank staff in a single deposit of takings from the Devonshire Colts Community Club from the weekend.

A Police spokesman said: "These notes appear to have been successfully passed during an event held at the club over the past weekend.

"We warn the public to be vigilant against what appears to be another recent upsurge in the passing of counterfeit notes -- a practice which often takes place in the poor lighting of nightclubs and similar venues.'' The Police spokesman added that individuals and businesses had no recourse if they accepted fake notes.

But he said: "We remind business merchants and retailers a counterfeit note can be easily identified by the simple practice of checking for the tuna watermark.

"Any note of Bermudian currency without this mark is a counterfeit.''
