Saturday evening when his quick action saved a woman from almost drowning.

P.c. David Geraghty was out having a swim at Elbow Beach around 6.30 p.m. when he heard a group of people calling for help.

He noticed that a woman had been pulled out 30 to 40 yards by the strong currents and waves and was unable to keep above water.

"The woman started screaming and she looked like she could only half swim, her husband went to help her trying to hold her up but she kept ducking him under,'' P.c. Geraghty said.

He added that because he had obtained a life saving certificate in the UK he swam out and held on to the woman from behind and swam her backward back to the beach.

"When we got back, medical staff talked to her and it was discovered that she had gotten a cramp and started to get pulled out by the current.'' P.c. Geraghty added that an ambulance was not called as the woman was all right.
