A photograph caption on the front page yesterday incorrectly identified Sinclair Swan, Chief Shop Steward for the Bermuda Public Service Association (Post Office Division) as mail handler Alan Roberts.

Insufficient lighting, no air conditioning and a leaky roof were a few of the grievances that forced postal workers to walk off the job yesterday.

Around noon some 30 workers left their posts at the Post Office's Airport Mail Facility in St. George's in protest of working conditions.

Among the workers' gripes were inadequate lighting in part of the building and limited ventilation.

Other than an open garage door, workers have complained that they have no fresh air coming in the building. Its five windows cannot open.

They also said the leaky roof created puddles when it rained.

The Royal Gazette obtained a copy of an agenda from a 1994 Health and Safety meeting where 13 complaints were filed.

In addition to the lighting, roof and air conditioning complaints, the committee heard about the need for pest control, a fire escape, a sick room and an exhaust fan.

The 1994 agenda also listed complaints about fumes from a garage next door.

They also cited the need for ceiling tile replacements, a janitor on Saturdays, and an emergency plan.

The walk-out brought Postmaster General Clevelyn Crichlow, the Bermuda Public Service Association's president Leleath Bailey and other officials to a meeting at the facility around 1.45 p.m. to discuss the workers' grievances.

And the delivery of some local mail was delayed.

But postal supervisor Randy Butler assured The Royal Gazette that overseas mail was able to leave the Island yesterday before the walk-out.

And by 3.15 p.m. the workers were back on the job after a reported settlement had been reached.

Bermuda Industrial Union organiser Chris Furbert, who was also at yesterday's meeting, refused to comment on the settlement.

He said a joint statement between the BPSA and the BIU will be issued today.
