The Royal Gazette last week polled people for their views.

Following the article in Thursday's paper, the question put to members of the public was: "Should the political Attorney General -- veteran MP Lois Browne Evans -- be paid $125,000 per year?'' "It's appalling,'' said Fred Dennis, a 59-year-old building manager. "She will be doing 20 percent of what the former Attorney General was doing. What are they going to pay the DPP? $250,000?''.

A 33-year-old executive assistant said: "Yes. Her history, all that she's done for the Island, she should get that pay.'' Diana Ming also believed Mrs. Browne Evans should receive the pay.

"If she's doing the work and doing a good job, she should be paid for it,'' Ms Ming said.

But 22-year-old managment trainee Curtis Williams said: "I don't think so.

She should be paid what the last AG was paid.'' Nick Ball, a 36-year-old telecommunications executive, also said he thought the salary was not fair.

"She should not be getting paid more than the normal salary,'' he said.

"I think the idea of a political Attorney General is a good one,'' said Linda Brown, a 36-year-old e-commerce executive.

"But the person should be accountable,'' she added.

Troy Hassell, a counsellor at the Bermuda College, said $125,000 "is a lot of money''.

He added that the pay of the Attorney General should be commensurate with the duties to be performed.
