Mr. Julian Hall insisted on being told if the force's Special Branch was dedicated to watching "non-criminal activity'' by Opposition politicians.

"To what extent is Special Branch used for political purposes, in the sense of seeking to find out what various prominent or not so prominent Parliamentarians do with their daily lives?'' he asked the Hon. Sir John Sharpe , Minister for Delegated Affairs.

Mr. Hall said he was making his "annual call'' for the Minister to tell the House of Assembly what Special Branch does.

He added that spending on Special Branch - nearly $1.5 million -had now overtaken spending on narcotics investigation.

Sir John replied: "The Government at least have never received any political observations on any party or person from the Police service.'' He said Special Branch provides VIP protection for visiting heads of state and is responsible for the security of Government buildings and of "key points'', namely Belco and Telco.

They also do drug intelligence work, he said.
