Rainey June the norm -- forecaster

An article in the same paper gave June 1990 weather figures as those of June, 1992. As of Tuesday afternoon only 5.38 inches of rain fell and not 6.2 inches as reported.

This month's weather is "right on the money'' according to the forecasters at the United States Naval Oceanography Command Facility.

The rainy days which have come to characterise June, 1992 are "far from unusual'', said commaning officer Lt. Cdr. Jim Bancroft. And the temperature is exactly as it should be.

"During the last two years, June has been extremely warm and dry,'' he said.

"A record was set last year as it being one of the warmest and driest in Bermuda's history. This June is right on the money.'' According to the Facility, Bermuda experienced drought conditions last June, recording only 4.03 inches of a total expected rainfall of 5.23 inches.

"The final tally for June's rainfall stands at 6.20 inches or almost a full inch greater than normal according to the Naval Oceanography Command Facility here,'' said Lt. Cdr. Bancroft. "We're 16 percent ahead of what the normal rainfall should be.

"Although June recorded a surplus of almost an inch, the year to date remains well over six and one half inches (6.65) below normal with a total of only 18.57 inches or 74 percent of normal. 25.22 inches is considered normal.

"Although Bermuda's norm for June is 5.23 inches,'' he added, "June was far from a record breaker for rain when compared to past years. 1962 was the Island's wettest June with a recording of 14.18 inches for the month. The driest June was in 1974 with only .84 inches recorded.'' Lt. Cdr. Bancroft said that June 1990 had an average daily high of 83 Fahrenheit and a low of 74.4 Fahrenheit. June of 1991 saw an average high of 82.3 Fahrenheit and an average low of 74 Fahrenheit.

For both years, the Facility reported that while the temperatures were "well above normal trends,'' no records were broken.

The average temperatures for this month -- a high of 80.3 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 72.9 Fahrenheit -- are quite normal, Lt. Cdr. Bancroft said.

He said the wettest period in Bermuda begins in June and ends at the conclusion of hurricane season in October.

"The driest periods of the year are February, March, April and May,'' he said.

DOWNPOUR -- The streets of Hamilton were soaked with rain yesterday as a month-long trend of heavy showers continued. Rainfall for the month stands at 6.20 inches, almost a full inch greater than normal.
