Cambridge Beaches has bought up a stretch of beach which could lead to the Somerset resort building villas to be owned by hotel guests.

The up-market property bought 500 feet of Warwick Long Bay from Freddie Yearwood six months ago, tripling the size of beach it owns on that site.

Previously, Mr. Yearwood allowed Cambridge Beaches guests to use the beach because the resort kept it clean.

The package of land also contains about four acres off the beach which features some rare and mature Bermudian foliage and fauna.

The land will be used as a garden space for guests, but Cambridge Beaches is also considering building 12 villas which would be owned by guests.

Cambridge Beaches President Mike Winfield said the idea was at a very early stage and that no proposals had been submitted to the planning department.

But he added that, if the move does eventually go ahead, he hoped to have the villas occupied by 2003.

He added that the Hotel Concessions Act, which gives duty breaks for significant capital projects, should help spur the project.

"We are very much about open space and we have got a very attractive piece of real estate with a lot of quite unique plants and foliage where the guests can wander around,'' said Mr. Winfield.

"They will be able to find a quiet spot and for returning guests there is the potential of ownership of a limited villa development.

"We are looking at all kinds of options. Pink Beaches and others have done similar ideas and we have a demand from guests looking for the best possible resort options.''
