More than 4 million Filipinos work overseas, often prepared to accept poor conditions for comparatively little pay as a viable alternative to poverty and chronic unemployment at home in the Philippines.

Bermuda is now home to more than 300 Filipinos and, as RG Senior Writer Elizabeth Harvey discovered, many are qualified professionals who have put careers on hold to work as nannies, potwashers and other menial jobs, often for appalling pay, to provide for families back home.

In a rare insight into Bermuda's Filipinos and their culture, Harvey also found a focused and cheerful community dismayed by the blatant racism they sometimes face on the Island and often afraid to speak out for fear of reprisals by employers.

Elizabeth Lawrence, a Filipino nurse married to a Bermudian, says she and her family have been subjected to abuse since she won the Mother of the Year award earlier this year. "I was never exposed to racism until I came to Bermuda,'' she said. "Here people are always mocking me for being Chinese.'' August's RG also includes the magazine's annual new technology section.

In this year's section, RG takes an in-depth look at how the Internet and telecommunications technology like ISDN and new messaging software is making global communication cheaper and faster.
