investigate the use of foreign workers in Bermuda's hotels.

Sen. Scott said yesterday he had copies of letters from non-Bermudians expecting to start work at the Marriott Castle Harbour Hotel this month.

Yet the hotel has just laid off three workers to add to a steady slimming down of the workforce over the past two years.

Sen. Scott's plea, however, was blasted by Government Senate Leader Sen.

Michael Winfield who said that an investigation was already underway.

The Opposition Leader read out the four letters from the foreign workers, for jobs which did not provide "tremendous skills which Bermudians could not provide.'' He also pointed out that four Haitians had been employed to remove asbestos from the Sonesta Beach Hotel, claiming a Bermudian workforce could have carried out the task.

He said he had contacted the Ministry of Immigration but had not yet received a reply. "The Government is the only agency with the type of clout that is needed to address these problems,'' he said.

Sen. Winfield said the Immigration department had only been contacted in November and it was unfair to expect a response already.

He said: "If there is some justification in the statement that Bermudians are being treated badly then this Government will act upon that.'' Earlier Sen. Trevor Woolridge (PLP) asked questions on the reduction of foreign military presence on the Island.

Sen. Woolridge said: "The Bermuda Government stated that `the Minister of Finance is currently updating the Archer Report assessment of the contribution of the United States and Canadian bases to the local economy.' "If the report has been completed, is Government in a position to reveal its findings? If not, when is it anticipated the report will be completed as pertaining to the Canadian base, in light of recent announcements of its closure, and the United States naval base? "Will the Government reveal what plans have been formulated for a Bermuda with a reduced level of non-existent foreign military presence?'' He asked for answers in time for next week's meeting of the Senate.
