The Spark of Life The impressive sculpture, created by Vivienne Gardner, is the focal point of the lobby in our new surgical wing at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The sculpture, commissioned for placement in this location, depicts two cupped hands that gently hold and preserve "The Spark of Life.'' Representing both the caregiver and the preservation of life itself, the base and hands are constructed of white stone, while the central flame shines from within a glass nugget.

Mrs. Gardner's use of the abstract form allows for an array of interpretations by the viewer: A newborn nestled in the gentle hands of the doctor The soothing hands of a nurse calming a patient in pain Specialists in the intensive care unit working to keep a patient alive A skilled, healing hands of the surgeon The eternal flame that burns in the memory of those who have passed on.
