It is believed that most of the birds -- with brown markings on the wings -- were removed last Sunday night from a shed at a Hungry Bay residence.

And two of the birds, which are of a rare species, are believed to have been stolen last Monday night.

The total estimated value of the stolen birds is $3,200.

COLLEGE TO MARK START OF YEAR EDC College to mark start of year Bermuda College will be celebrating the official beginning of its academic year on Monday, August 21, at the College Court in Stonington Campus.

This is called convocation and it is a coming together of faculty, staff, students, local dignitaries and friends of the College.

A special invitation is also being extended to the parents of the freshmen students this year.

Speakers will be Chairman of the Board of Governors Dr. James King, President Dr. George Cook, Mrs. Susan Harvey who will represent the graduating class of 1995 and Peer Advisor Mr. Adrian Barnaby.

Presentations will also be made to the 19 students who have been named to the President's List for their academic achievements.

REPORT ORDERED FOR THIEF CTS Report ordered for thief A Magistrate this week ordered a social inquiry report for a 16-year-old who said he stole a motorcycle because he had just got his licence that day.

Franklyn Pearman, of Lookout Lane, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to taking a motorcycle without the consent of the owner and riding it on the road without insurance.

Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said the owner parked the motorcycle on Park Road in Pembroke at 1.10 p.m. on July 17.

"A short while later she saw a young male push it out of the parking space,'' he said. "She followed him onto Dundonald Street.'' But neither she nor her co-workers could catch him.

Later that day Police saw the youngster riding on South Road in Pembroke, Sgt.

Dale said.

"He told Police he just got it for his cousin.'' Pearman told the court: "I just got my licence that day. I just wanted to ride a bike.'' The Wor. Edward King told him not to take what was not his.

Mr. King said the only reason he was not going to send Pearman straight to prison was because of his age.

He released Pearman on $300 bail with a like surety and ordered him to return to court on September 20 when the social inquiry report was due.

MAN FINED $200 CTS Man fined $200 A 28-year-old Hamilton Parish man was yesterday fined $200 for obstructing Police.

Shandieos Bowen, of Ord Road, pleaded guilty to the offence in Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Police saw Bowen standing near Dub City Variety Store on Crawl Hill with four youths shortly after 6.30 p.m. on August 9.

"He was seen fidgeting which aroused the suspicion of the Police officers,'' Sgt. Dale said.

When Bowen saw the Police he first started to walk away, but then started to run.

"Police gave chase and caught him,'' said Sgt. Dale. "During a cursory search he instructed a person nearby to grab a black pouch around his throat.

The other person did so and made good his escape.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis told Bowen he had to pay a $200 fine or spend 20 days in prison.

FRUIT THIEVES OUT CTS Fruit thieves out Police are asking fruit vendors to watch out for individuals who offer them fruits and vegetables at below market prices.

In the latest report of stolen fruit, 80 avocado pears were stolen from an orchard in Warwick.

In separate incidents Police said two beach thefts were reported yesterday.

They said the first theft occured at Tobacco Bay at around 4 p.m. and the second at Horseshoe Bay between 6 and 7 p.m.
