Condolences for the family of top public servant the late Mr. Ernest Owen Jr.

who was killed in a road accident on Saturday, poured in from senators yesterday.

Sen. Gerald Simons (UBP) said Mr. Owen, a keen bridge player and dedicated family man, was highly regarded by the Labour and Home Affairs minister and staff members.

"Bermuda has lost an outstanding man who cared deeply about his Country and was open to people,'' said Sen. Lynda Milligan-Whyte (UBP).

She said Mr. Owen was one of the first Bermudians to be appointed to a high level in the civil service, adding he would be missed by his colleagues and the ministers.

Sen. Gary Pitman (UBP) called him "a truly dedicated family man''.

Sen. Milton Scott (PLP) said Mr. Owen's unassuming personality helped smooth tense labour-management relations. "He kept us from each others' throats ...

his impact has been profound,'' he said.

Sen. Lawrence Scott (UBP) said he was shocked at Mr. Owen's untimely death. He reminded Bermudians to behave more cautiously on the roads.

Condolences were also offered to the family of the late Mrs. Madeleine Adams, an active church member by Sen. Yvette Swan (UBP).

Sen. Alf Oughton (Independent) praised organisers and winners of the School Quiz Show as did Sen. Neletha Butterfield (PLP).

She further congratulated top middle distance runner Miss Jennifer Fisher for her participation in the Pan-Am Games and the organisers of events commemorating the life of the late Dr. E.F. Gordon, in particular Mr. Dale Butler.

Sen. Gary Pitman (UBP) congratulated Marriott's Castle Harbour Resort general manager Mr. Roger Borsink as winner of this year's Hotelier of the Year awards.
