And his failure to appear at Warwick Camp for Bermuda Regiment duties between June and October landed him a suspended prison sentence.

Magistrate Edward King sentenced Ebbin -- named for the great Mongol warrior and king Ghengis Khan -- to three months in prison suspended for one year after he admitted yesterday to failing to appear at Warwick Camp on 11 occasions between June 10 and October 21.

Mr. King told Ebbin, 22, of Friswell's Hill, Pembroke, it was his responsibility to turn up to regimental drills and parades.

Crown Counsel Larry Mussenden said Ebbin was enlisted in the Regiment on November 8, 1994 and was required to attend the drills. Mr. Mussenden -- a Regiment officer -- said Ebbin was sentenced in March to two concurrent one-month prison sentences for similar offences.

Mr. King refused to grant Ebbin's request for a social inquiry report, saying: "You never went to Probation Services for the one that was set in March. You want another one?'' He added: "You have already done time at Westgate for this. That (Regimental duties) is one of the benefits of being Bermudian. It is your responsibility.
