Tyrone Simmons, of Aubrey Estate Road in Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to possessing an offensive weapon -- a flick knife -- in a public place.

The court heard that the Regiment Policeman approached Simmons at Warwick Camp on June 20 and asked for his name.

An argument erupted, during which Simmons brandished a flick knife, Sgt. Grant said.

But Simmons claimed he had the flick knife -- which is a prohibited weapon -- for work and that he had left it in his jacket.

"I took out the knife in self defence because the guy was going to hit me.'' Simmons told Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis.

Mr. Francis, however, stressed that Simmons should not have had the flick knife at all because it was a prohibited weapon.

Simmons retorted that he had brought the knife in Bermuda and was not aware that it was prohibited.

MAN CHARGED WITH ARMED ROBBERY CTS Man charged with armed robbery A 24-year-old Pembroke man this week faced charges of armed robbery and unlawful wounding.

Shannon Looby, of Berkeley Hill, was not required to enter a plea to charges of possessing an offensive weapon, a 12-inch pronged fork, stealing $100 from Esso City Service Centre, disguising his face with intent to steal, and unlawful wounding, when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.

The charges stem from a robbery which took place at the 24-hour Esso City Service Centre on Richmond Road in Pembroke around 2 a.m. on June 17.

Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp released Looby on $10,000 bail with two like sureties.

Mrs. Mapp ordered him to return to court next month.

HOMELESS MAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY CTS Homeless man remanded in custody Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp this week remanded a 25-year-old homeless man -- accused of attempting to rob two women and a restaurant -- in custody.

Kenneth Burrows pleaded not guilty to wearing a mask with intent to steal, demanding money from two women and threatening injuries if they did not comply, attempting to rob them, stealing their livery cycle, and stealing $285 worth of liquor from New Woody's Restaurant and Bar on June 15.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant asked that Burrows not be released on bail because nine warrants had been issued for him since 1989, and there was concern he would bother the complainants.

"Since he is without a home it might be in his best interests,'' Sgt. Grant told Mrs. Mapp.

But duty counsel Mr. Michael Scott objected to Burrows being held without bail and he denied he did not have a home.

Mr. Scott said Burrows was living with his mother.

"Kenneth was much the worse for drink on that night,'' he added.

However, Mrs. Mapp said: "It always amazes me how people have no money for constructive things, but enough money for the destructive things in life.'' And she remanded Burrows in custody until July 4 when he will return to court for trial.

GUILTY TO DRIVING, BOATING OFFENCES CTS Guilty to driving, boating offences A 29-year-old Pembroke man yesterday was fined $450 for driving and boating offences.

Ottis Ingham, of Second Avenue, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving an unlicensed car and two counts of failing to carry the proper safety equipment on his boat.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said Police stopped Ingham on March 22 on Palmetto Road in Devonshire for driving an unlicensed car.

Sgt. Grant also said two months later Harbour Radio received a report about a boat that had broken down by Crawl Point.

Police towed the boat to Great Bay in St. David's where they conducted a safety equipment search, Sgt. Grant said.

Ingham did not have any flares or rockets on his boat. He also did not have an anchor that met water safety guidelines.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Ingham $150 for driving an unlicensed car, $150 for failing to carry an anchor which met official requirements, and $150 for not having flares and rockets on his boat.

US VISITOR IN POSSESSION OF CANNIBIS CTS US visitor in possession of cannabis Importing cannabis cost a 42-year-old US visitor $100 yesterday.

Sharon Clarke, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said Customs officers searched Clarke's bags when she arrived in Bermuda on a USAir flight on June 17.

They found two homemade cigarettes in a makeup kit in Clarke's baggage.

The cigarettes were found to contain .44 grams of cannabis, Sgt. Grant said.
