The man, who has not named, was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital suffering serious injuries to his head and upper body.

He underwent emergency surgery and was last night said to be critically ill in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Stabbing victim fighting for life Police said the attack happened yesterday at about 7.30 a.m. on Court Street, close to the Spinning Wheel, but they say they have not yet established a motive for the incident.

A passing motorcyclist saw two men fighting and reported the incident to the Police. When officers went to the scene they discovered the 29-year-old with serious injuries.

They arrested a 46-year-old Pembroke man and found a machete which is thought to have been used in the attack. Last night the 46-year-old was helping Police with their investigations.

Det. Insp. Sinclair White, who is in charge of the investigation, said the victim had been struck a number of times with the weapon. He said both men are from Pembroke but frequent the Court Street area.

"There were witnesses around and members of the public have been very helpful by coming forward, but there are other witnesses who I would like to speak to,'' he said.

"We do not yet know what the motive was, but we do have a person in custody helping us with our enquiries.'' Anyone with information can call Chief Insp.
