The man was originally brought in for questioning and was said to be "helping Police with their inquiries'' on Monday.

But detectives revealed they had arrested the same man at the major incident room on Monday afternoon.

He spent Monday and Tuesday nights in cells at Hamilton Police Station and is now being held for further questioning. But Police would give no details about the man under arrest last night, not even revealing his age or home parish.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said yesterday: "I can confirm that a man was arrested yesterday afternoon at the major incident room in connection with the rape.

"It is the same man who was originally in for questioning but we are not prepared to give any details pertaining to the individual or the investigation, other than what is already known.'' Detective Chief Inspector Carlton Adams is running the rape inquiry from the Prospect incident room. The victim was attacked early on Saturday morning after the intruder climbed in through her bedroom window in Paget.

Police Commissioner Jean-Jacques Lemay joined Public Safety Minister Paula Cox for a press conference urging witnesses to come forward.
