Thief forged $1,000 worth of cheques

Richard S. Lee, 23, of Ord Road, Paget pleaded guilty to stealing, forging and uttering the cheques.

Sgt. Wilbert McLean, prosecuting, told the court that Lee was cleaning the construction site office at the hotel on May 21, he said, when he found three employee pay cheques.

"On that same day Lee forged and uttered one cheque for $539 at the Bank of Bermuda on Front Street,'' Sgt. McLean said.

"He then went to the Bank of Bermuda on Church Street where he forged and uttered another cheque receiving $637.

"The last cheque was forged and uttered at the Bank of Bermuda on Front Street where Lee received $54.'' Sgt. McLean said the hotel became aware of the theft and Police contacted Lee.

"He admitted the offence and he was arrested on June 5 '', Sgt. McLean said.

When questioned by the Police Lee said that he was sorry and had committed the offence because he was under pressure to pay some bills.

Sgt. McLean added that Lee had previous convictions of theft.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis ordered a social inquiry report which will be read on July 27.
