Eduardo Bolarinho, 30, and Gabriel Bolarinho, 39, both of Brighton Hill Road, Devonshire and Jose Cabral do Couto, 31, of Outerlea Farm, Smith's Parish, admitted being unlawfully engaged in gainful employment without permission from the Labour and Home Affairs Minister.

Their employer, Andrew DeFontes of Doo-All carpet cleaners, pleaded not guilty to charges of employing the three men without having specific permission from the Labour and Home Affairs minister.

This case comes just weeks after MP Mrs. Grace Bell, the managing director of Houseprouds Cleaning Service, called for identification cards for guest workers to stop illegal workers operating in the cleaning industry.

Yesterday, Crown Counsel Ms Nita Grewal said on February 15 at 8.10 p.m. all three men were seen cleaning the MarketPlace on Church Street by an immigration official.

"They did not have work permits for this type of employment but all three had permits for regular work,'' Ms Grewal said.

She added that the men admitted working for Doo-All carpet cleaners.

"During various periods Eduardo Bolarinho worked for seven to eight months cleaning and was paid $9.60 an hour. Gabriel Bolarinho said he worked three months for Doo-All and received $9.65 an hour, and do Couto admitted working for the company since December 1994 earning $10 an hour.'' Translator for the three men Mr. Eddie DeMello said do Couto had been on the Island for seven months and was unaware that he had to have a permit to work part-time.

"They were approached by Mr. DeFontes to take the job and they feel the onus should be on the company and not them.''
