spring clean of the Island today.

Every part of the community is uniting in an effort to clean up the litter that has built up over the last 12 months.

It will mean roads, paths, fields, bushes, woods and the coastline will look a lot cleaner for residents and visitors alike.

And Bermuda Sub Aqua Club will be joining in to tidy up one area of water which has been an eyesore for humans and fish for some time.

The File-a-Mile event, which began yesterday, involves schools and businesses working hand-in-hand to clear away the mess.

Organised by Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Ms Karen Ray said: "A lot of business have signed up with many of the schools.

"Most of the areas of the Island are signed up although there is a shortage of schemes in St. George's, Sandys and Somerset, but there are always problems there.'' The Bank of Butterfield and The Bermuda Electric Light Company are two of the major companies involved. In fact Belco will have 50 members of staff cleaning up the whole of Spanish Point.

Heddington Insurance has sponsored the Bermuda High School while St. George's Secondary School will be doing their bit in the East End.

Public Relations Officer for KBB, Mrs. Emma Mitchell said: `It has been a huge effort but the response has been fantastic.'' Mrs. Mitchell said that much of the garbage collected will become part of the Government's recycling programme, wherever possible.

Bermuda Sub Aqua Club press officer Mr. Dave Cruickshank says the club is intending this weekend's activities to be part of an effort over the year.

Fifteen divers will be working tomorrow to clean up the waters near to their club in Admiralty Park.

Mr. Cruickshank said: "It will be good training for our trainees divers and will show them how we can become involved in the environment.

"We will be expecting to be bringing out 20 to 30 bags of trash. It is a place used by the public and there are a lot of bottles down there, but we also tend to find bike frames as well.''
