The civil servant, Mr. Randy Horton, the assistant director of sporting activities at the Tourism Department, was suspended on July 26.

He was a former New York Cosmos player, Somerset Cup Match captain and a current cricket commentator in Bermuda. Mr. Horton is also a former headmaster. In a statement issued last week, the Information Services director Mr. Gavin Shorto, confirmed a Government employee had been suspended from duty in connection with a suspected breach of general orders.

Yesterday, Mr. Shorto would make no further comment on the issue, refusing to give further reasons for the suspension or even to clarify if the person was suspended on full pay. Last night in a short statement, the Bermuda Police Service confirmed it had been contacted by the Department of Tourism.

"We can confirm we are investigating a matter on behalf of the Tourism Department, however, we are not prepared to disclose the name of any individual involved or the nature of the investigation,'' said a spokesman.

Last night Mr. Horton declined to comment.
