Tourism focuses on families
by copious quantities of "old Navy grog'' -- to lay siege to Washington D.C.
following a day of touring attractions at the Royal Naval Dockyard.
It's harmless, entertaining, and part of the Ministry of Tourism's inaugural year of Camp Bermuda, a summer-season programme aimed at selling Bermuda as a family funspot destination.
"More and more people are exploring the world together and this is just a recognition that families want to spend quality time together,'' Minister of Tourism David Dodwell yesterday told The Royal Gazette .
Camp Bermuda -- a collaborative effort between Government and the private sector -- promises the family traveller in the US and Canada destination oriented activities built around attractions such as the Maritime Museum, the Aquarium and Dolphin Quest, as well as heritage sites such as St. George's.
Families will also be invited to participate in historic re-enactments such as the War of 1812's taking of Washington -- an invasion that was launched from Bermuda's shores.
Island hotels and other business have also signed on to the programme; some such as the Southampton Princess and the Sonesta are offering free accomodation to children under 16, including breakfast and lunch.
Camp Bermuda will be spearheaded by Government travel offices, travel agents and wholesalers, as well as a print ad campaign in publications such as Parent Magazine.
