Tourist fined $3,250 for drugs
Magistrates' Court yesterday to importing 32.4 grams of cannabis to Bermuda.
Mark Cavallo, 30, was fined a further $250 for possessing a pipe intended to smoke the cannabis with.
"That's an awful lot of cannabis,'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis noted. Cavallo, of Massachusetts, told the court he was here on his honeymoon and the drug was for his use.
Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, said the cannabis was found during a search of Cavallo at the airport on the afternoon of August 31. Insp. Duffy said the cannabis was found in two plastic bags concealed in Cavallo's underwear in his groin area. He added when the pipe was later examined, cannabis resin was found on it.
NEW YORKER IS FINED $400 CTS New Yorker is fined $400 A New Yorker pleaded guilty yesterday to possessing cocaine and drug equipment when he arrived at the airport on August 31. Insp. Duffy said the cocaine was found wrapped in a tinfoil in a plastic bag in the 40-year-old tourist's wallet.
Also in the bag was a razor blade, two cut straws and cigarette papers, Insp.
Duffy said. He said the cocaine was later found to weigh .52 grams and traces of the drug were found on the straws.
Edward Cardinale told the court he was not aware the drug was in his wallet.
Mr. Francis fined him $300 for the cannabis and $100 for the equipment.
TRAFFIC OFFENCES COST MAN $550 CTS Traffic offences cost man $550 Driving without due care -- and without a driver's licence -- landed a St.
David islander in court. Dennison Cannonier, 31, pleaded guilty to the two offences and also to perverting the cause of justice by giving Police attending the accident a false name.
Insp. Duffy said Cannonier was involved in a road traffic accident on August 20 at about 5 p.m. on Middle Road in Warwick. He said he slammed into the back of car which had stopped for a car in front of it which in turn had stopped to let someone turn into Giant supermarket.
Insp. Duffy said Cannonier gave Police his brother's name and date of birth.
Further inquiries revealed the information was incorrect and Cannonier was brought into the Police station for questioning where he admitted the lie.
Cannonier told the court he has since gotten his driver's licence.
Mr. Francis heard he had a two-year suspended sentence for forgery, but decided to use his discretion and not activate it since the charge was unrelated. He fined him $300 for the false statement, $150 for driving without due care and $100 for no driver's licence.
RUNNING AWAY NO SOLUTION CTS Running away no solution A man who admitted he darted from Police when they said they were going to search him under the Misuse of Drugs Act was fined $300. Insp. Duffy said Lagary Hodge, 37, of Devonshire, was seen standing in an alleyway on Elliott Street by Police on foot patrol.
Insp. Duffy said the officers approached Hodge after they saw him put a pipe in his pocket. Before they got to him Hodge took off down the alleyway, which had a dead end. The officers saw Hodge then take the pipe out of his pocket and throw it at a wall so it smashed into little pieces, Insp. Duffy said.
Hodge had nothing to say to the court.
