Firefighters had to use special inflatable bags to lift the bus in order to free the man and woman.

They were taken to the King Edward VII Hospital with leg and facial injuries but their condition was said to be stable.

The accident happened on Mullet Bay Road, near the Mullet Bay Park, at about 12.30 p.m. yesterday.

According to the Public Transportation Board the bus was en route to Hamilton when the accident happened.

It appears that near the park entrance the tourists came off their auxiliary bike but their momentum carried them under the bus, which had been able to stop.

The Fire Service used air lifting bags and hydraulic jacks to free the two visitors who were taken by ambulance to hospital. Their injuries were said to be serious but not life threatening.

Traffic was backed up about half a mile in each direction while Police investigated the cause of the crash and cleared the scene.

Yesterday's crash comes a few days after a report from doctors at the King Edward Hospital which showed tourists are five times more likely than locals to suffer a road accident.

The figure came from a report from doctors who looked at traffic statistics from July to September, 1993.

Their study looked at 657 incoming traffic-accident victims during the peak Bermuda tourist season.

"Tourists visiting Bermuda are at high risk of injury from motorbike use, with rates of injury much higher than the local population,'' said the report.

Neither bus driver nor passengers were injured in the crash and the bus sustained slight damage.

The names and nationalities of the tourists involved were not being released last night.
