Forty-one-year-old Bermudian Ms Outerbridge moves into her new post on February 8, 1993.

She replaces ex-Cabinet Secretary Mr. James Williams, who has been acting director since the shock resignation of Mr. Alwyn McKittrick.

Mr. McKittrick controversially quit as director in September after 21 months.

He later admitted he was virtually forced to resign and also criticised interference from members of the Trust's Council in the day-to-day management of the charity.

Ms Outerbridge, formerly editor of The Mid-Ocean News and assistant editor of The Royal Gazette was picked from around 10 applicants.

The National Trust's council agreed to offer her the job last Friday, and she accepted yesterday.

Mr. Hugh Davidson, chairman of the search committee appointed by the council to find a candidate, said the Trust had great hopes for the appointment.

"We will start next year with a very positive approach,'' he said.

Mr. Davidson said Ms Outerbridge was chosen because she was considered a competent manager and administrator.

"We felt she was the most capable of those we interviewed, and had the potential to do a good job. She is very enthusiastic, and we look forward to having her on the board.'' Mr. Davidson said he later discovered Ms Outerbridge's uncle, Mr. Michael Darling, is a former president of the Trust.

Her grandfather Mr. Leslie Darling had also been involved in the Trust's predecessor, the Bermuda Historical Monuments Trust, during the late '40s and '50s.

Mr. Davidson said the director's job carried enormous responsibilities, involving the management and administration of the Trust.

The Trust, which owns 200 acres of land and around 80 buildings, has an annual budget of over $1 million.

Ms Outerbridge said yesterday she was thrilled about her new job.

"I'm really delighted about it, and looking forward to starting,'' she said.

Ms Outerbridge said the position marked a career departure -- she has been a journalist all her working life.

As executive editor of Bermuda Marketing, since September 1989, she has overseen several magazines, including Bermuda Business and TV Times.
