the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching dyslexic students. The initial training to become a tutor takes close to one year and includes both written and oral exams and a lengthy practicum.

The tutor continues to develop his/her skills through monthly meetings with the Tutor Supervisor, consultations with the Director and further training sessions by visiting overseas specialists.

The tutors are paid a fee by the student's parents. However, if clients are unable to afford the tuition, financial assistance is provided. A few tutors donate their tutoring fees back to The Reading Clinic as a scholarship donation.

Gillian Ramsdale, tutor supervisor, explained, "The tutors generally teach each of their students for 3 one hour lessons per week. Most of the tutoring is done before or after school, between 8 am and 9 am or 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm.

"Lessons take place wherever is most convenient for both the student and the tutor. Without the tutors, we would be unable to provide the specific help that students with dyslexia require.''
