Warning over bogus callers
2000 will contact members of the public in person, not over the phone.
The information followed a report that a man called a home claiming to be an enumerator and began asking questions. A second telephone call was placed by a woman who asked the female homeowner's age and if she was the head of the household.
Police were notified about the incident yesterday afternoon.
A Police spokeswoman said: "We have been put in touch with the individual and are now actively investigating the incident.'' Census enumerators will have an official picture identification card issued by the census office and the office warned people to make sure they saw the card before answering any questions.
They will also have the Census 2000 logo on their briefcases.
Island households will receive a postcard informing them of the beginning of Census 2000 on May 20.
Enumerators will begin making visits to households on May 21 at the earliest.
