study into the disappearance of a Bermuda treasure.

Bermuda's marine toads and tree frogs, whose whistling during the evening first surprises and then delights visitors, are under severe threat to the point that one of the Island's two species of tree frog has completely disappeared.

The cause of the decline in the Island's amphibious populations is of great concern to local and overseas scientists alike as it could ultimately affect other species also.

Suspects include environmental concerns such as the increasing use of pesticides, acid rain and gaps in the ozone layer which is believed to result in global warming and increased ultra-violet light.

Dr. Donald Linzey, a lecturer at Wytheville College in Virginia, has led the Bermuda Toad Project since its inception but is finding his research work once again hampered by lack of funding.

Dr. Linzey has constantly appealed for funding since starting his project and Bermuda Toad Project administrator Marsha Andrew can be reached for donations at 292-3732.

He returned to the Island on Friday to continue his study and will give a presentation to the public today at 8 p.m.
