Woman admits 11 counts under foreign cash laws
appeared in Supreme Court yesterday during the monthly arraignment session.
Kenna-Lee Marie Blakeney admitted making false statements to the Bermuda Monetary Authority in which she alleged she required the foreign currency for trips to New York.
Blakeney, represented by Mr. Khamisi Tokunbo, pleaded guilty to 11 of the 22 counts which stretched from August 27, 1991 to April 3, 1992.
Crown Counsel Ms Sharon Kenny said the matter would be going to trial on the remaining counts.
Puisne Judge the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward ordered Blakeney to reappear at the next arraignment session on August 3.
Also appearing in court was well-known runner Ronue McKindley Cann. Cann, of Ord Road, Warwick, pleaded not guilty to importing approximately 10 pounds of cannabis valued at $220,000 into Bermuda on February 16. He also denied being in possession of the drug which was intended for supply on the same date.
Mr. Justice Ward released Cann on $5,000 bail and ordered that he surrender his travel documents.
A Pembroke teenager pleaded not guilty to four counts involving cocaine when she appeared at the monthly arraignment session.
Eighteen-year-old Robin Young, of Boundary Crescent, pleaded not guilty to two charges of handling and possessing cocaine intended for supply on February 9.
She and American Jacqueline Martells also face charges of conspiring to import cocaine to the Island between January 1 and February 10.
They are also charged with importing the cocaine on February 9. Both have denied each of the two charges.
Young was represented by Mr. Archie Warner and Martells was represented by Mr.
Khamisi Tokunbo.
Mr. Justice Ward released both females on $5,000 bail and like sureties and told Martells to surrender her travel documents. He ordered them to reappear in court for the next arraignment session.
Former Bank of Bermuda officer Calvin O. Shabazz appeared on charges that he committed fraud, stealing more than $150,000 while employed as assistant manager of retail banking.
The Southampton resident had earlier pleaded not guilty to stealing $2,500 from the bank on October 19, 1990, $25,000 on November 2, 1990, $16,000 on December 17, 1990, and $121,000 between July and September, 1988.
He has also denied five further charges of fraudulent false accounting.
Shabazz's lawyer, Mr. Ian Kawaley, informed Mr. Justice Ward that he would be making an application to quash his client's indictment tomorrow morning.
Dexter Edwin Dillas and Larry Sinclair Ebbin appeared at the session. The couple's lawyer, Mr. Delroy Duncan, said he would be making an application for his clients' bail today.
The two will be tried a second time, on September 28, on charges of importing more than 20 pounds of cocaine. Mr. Justice Ward ordered that the two be remanded in custody.
Wendell Ible pleaded guilty to burglary, admitting he broke into and entered a home on February 8.
Ible, represented by Ms Charles-Etta Simmons, confessed he stole $3,340 worth of German marks and various items valued at $2,200.
He was remanded in custody and ordered to reappear in court for sentencing on July 10.
Randolph Anthony Davis pleaded not guilty to four counts involving cannabis during the morning session.
He denied possessing and handling cannabis which was intended for supply last Christmas Eve.
Davis also pleaded not guilty to misusing the cannabis and possessing drug equipment.
Mr. Justice Ward ordered that Davis reappear in court for mention at the next arraignment session on August 3.
