However, the culprit, realising the woman was awake, ran down a path. Police were contacted and attended soon afterwards, but were unable to find the man.

Police further reported that earlier in the day, a thief forced his way into a home on Railway Terrace in Pembroke. He ransacked a bedroom, stealing $80 from inside a bank book and another $100 in loose change from a money bag.

FISH TANK FIRE FIR An electrical fault in the lid of a fish tank sparked a fire at a home at Cedar Park in Prospect yesterday morning. Four fire engines responded, but the blaze had already been extinguished when they arrived.

An estimated $300 worth of damage was caused, with the fire being confined to the tank only. The fish were unharmed but one person was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation and later released.

Firemen used a smoke extractor to clear the air before leaving.

ADDICT DETAINED CRM A 22-year-old cocaine addict was remanded in custody for two weeks yesterday to "catch herself'' before being sentenced.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. Kim White told Kamala Battersbee of Southampton she "seemed to be in a bad way'' and was facing some serious charges.

Battersbee had pleaded guilty to possession of a pipe intended to smoke cocaine last February 12.

Mr. White ordered a social inquiry report and told her to appear for sentencing on June 28, when she will face further charges -- including possession of an offensive weapon.

THIEF JAILED CTS A man was sent to prison yesterday after he admitted stealing a North Shore barber shop's stereo valued at $600 over the holiday weekend. Magistrates' Court heard Jay Ming, 21, of Pembroke had a nine-month suspended sentence hanging over his head for a similar offence.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. Kim White said he did not feel Ming, who had a lengthy history of criminal offences, deserved a second chance.

He activated the sentence and handed down a further nine-month sentence, but made it concurrent to the first.

STUDENT FINED CTS Student William E. DeGrilla was caught near the cenotaph in Hamilton with cannabis and a pipe, Magistrates' Court heard this week.

DeGrilla, 22, of Grayridge Drive, Paget, was searched by Police after they were told of suspicious people near the monument, the court heard.

He admitted having the pipe and 0.21 grams of the drug on the night of February 5 and was fined $250.

CRACK FOUND CTS Possession of crack cocaine cost a 30-year-old man a $100 fine in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Vincent Joaquin of Cobb's Hill in Paget pleaded guilty to the offence saying he had been taking the drug to someone when Narcotics Officers arrested him at his home around 10.30 p.m. on March 17.

Prosecutor Sgt. Rex Osborne said the drug was later found to weigh .10 grams.

HANDBAG SNATCH CRM Police reported a visitor had her handbag snatched on Thursday afternoon while riding her moped on Camp Hill Road in Southampton.

The culprit rode up on a motorcycle, grabbed her bag and headed towards Middle Road.

The visitor pursued the thief, but only got as far as Five Star Island before losing sight of him.

BREAK-IN FOILED CRM Two Policemen conducting routine checks on properties in Warwick around 5.30 a.m. yesterday caught a 35-year-old man trying to break into White's supermarket, having scaled the store's roof. The officers climbed up and arrested him. A court appearance is expected soon.
