first person apprehended in Bermuda with opium, Police prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy told Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Maureen Mannix admitted possession of opium, cocaine, and two drug paraphernalia charges.

She was carrying 2.27 grams of opium, 5.12 grams of cocaine as well as a pipe and a syringe when she came to Bermuda on April 27, 1995.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. William Francis fined Mannix $600, $200, $100, and $100 respectively.

When Mannix arrived at the Civil Air Terminal officials found the items during a routine inspection.

The cocaine and opium were located in various envelopes while the syringe was found in an eyeglass case.

The construction worker and mother of one child lay down on a bench while Mr.

Francis was dealing with another matter.

Mr. Francis chided Mannix for her behaviour.

"You wouldn't act like that in from of a US court judge. We in these islands expect the same (respect),'' he said.

Prior to sentencing, Ms Victoria Pearman, acting as duty counsel, told the Court that the California resident was deeply remorseful.

Ms Pearman said Mannix did not mean disrespect to the Court when she lay down on the bench but indicated the woman was "in some physical difficulty at this time.'' Mannix apologised to the Court and to Bermuda for her actions.
