spate of violent and sexual attacks around the Island.

The Women's Resource Centre issued the caution last night and advised women to remain together when out enjoying themselves.

Chairperson Penny Dill said the warning was more relevant than ever with the likelihood of excess drinking and Christmas parties.

Handbook issued: Page 7 Women warned She said: "At this time of Christmas celebrations, and after the recent sexual assaults, the Women's Resource Centre is concerned that women take necessary precautions to prevent themselves becoming susceptible to this type of crime.

"The Police have expressed concern to us that there have been incidents where women have become intoxicated and, instead of arranging for transportation home, have decided to walk home alone.

"We would like to advise women that if they are going to a party, to ensure that they arrange for transportation ahead of time, and have a buddy system in place, where you are not alone, if you are going to drink alcohol.

"Do not walk in dark areas and ensure that you are aware of your surroundings.'' The warning came following 12 sexual and violent attacks on women across the Island in less than three months.

Some were sexually motivated, others the result of robbery, but they all left the victims shocked and distressed, and even injured.

And then last week, Police received two separate complaints of sexual attacks in the space of 48 hours.

However, they later said how investigations had shown that both alleged incidents were untrue.

As a result, one of the complainants is now facing a charge of fabricating the allegation.

But Ms Dill said those unfortunate incidents should not put other women off making viable complaints.

She added: "According to the Police, some of the recent sexual assaults have been unfounded.

"The Women's Resource Centre would like to encourage women to come forward if they are sexually assaulted and seek help.''
