strike -- will submit its arguments over three disciplinary disputes to the Department of Labour today.

And that will give Home Affairs Minister Paula Cox less than a week to bring the two sides of the Department of Works and Engineering together.

Bermuda Industrial Union staff at the department, which includes trash collectors, issued a 21-day strike notice at the beginning of the month after an agreement on three longstanding disputes could not be reached.

Strike action will kick in next Tuesday if progress cannot be made.

Last night Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott confirmed his department had already sent files on two of the three cases to the Ministry of Labour, with the third expected to be sent out later today.

VISITOR ATTACKED CRM Visitor attacked A visitor was treated in hospital following a struggle with a thief at an Island beauty spot.

The man was hurt after he chased a thief who had taken a handbag from his rental scooter, yesterday morning.

Police said the incident happened as the man and his wife were at Gates Fort, St. George's. They returned to their cycle to see a man walking off with the handbag, which had been left on the machine.

A struggle followed and the male visitor fell, hitting his head on rocks. He was treated in hospital and later released.

Police said the bag was recovered minus cash and credit cards.

DRIVER BANNED CTS Driver banned A restaurant manager has been taken off the road for 12 months after failing to provide Police with a breath sample.

Christof Regittnig, 45, who runs the Red Carpet restaurant on Reid Street, was stopped by Police on Front Street in the early hours of March 22.

When questioned by the officers Regittnig admitted that he had had "about six drinks''. He was then taken to Hamilton Police Station but failed to give a breath sample.

In Magistrates' Court yesterday Regittnig was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months and also fined $600.

IT WAS ALMOST FIXED! ENV It was almost fixed! A bundle of junk and trash pictured in The Royal Gazette yesterday was actually the result of a neighbourhood clean-up effort.

The photo had appeared under the title, "Lets Fix It!''.

But Dilton Lightbourne, of Rocklands Estate, Warwick said neighbours in the area joined forces to try to clean up sections of the nearby Railway Trail which have been used as dump sites.

"The effort is part of the Rocklands Neighbourhood Watch group and some good Samaritans have been helping as they can, with the clean-up.'' According to Mr. Lightbourne, the refuse will be trucked away by this weekend.

END-TO-END GEARS UP FNR CLB End-to-End gears up Nearly 500 walkers are expected to register for this year's End-to-End Walk -- a major fundraising event to be held next month.

"In 11 years of walking, 8,000 walkers have raised $1,135,000,'' chairperson for the End-to-End Walk Starla Williams said. "And we're looking forward to raising over $150,000 this year.'' Sponsors, charity recipients, Golf Club walkers and many others are expected to participate in the walk.

Next Wednesday there will be registration from noon to 2 p.m. on the steps of City Hall.

At that time participants will turn in initial pledges and receive goody bags for successfully raising $250 or more.

The Bermuda Cancer and TB Association will give advice about sun safety, and health and fitness professionals will give walking tips. There will also be musical performances and refreshments will be provided during the day.
