Cycle thief Angelo Trott was sent home with his mother yesterday after spending a week behind bars.

Trott, 16, was remanded in custody after breaking bail and probation conditions imposed on him by Senior Magistrate Will Francis.

And after a week at the Co-Ed Facility, Trott stood up in Magistrates' Court moments before he was due to be sentenced yesterday and told Mr. Francis: "I would like to apologise for stealing the bike and not keeping to the curfew you gave me. You won't see me back in here again.'' The Simons Drive, Warwick man pleaded guilty to stealing a rental bike worth more than $2,000 from the parking lot at Angel's Grotto guest house in August.

He was nabbed riding the cycle on Victoria Street in Hamilton by Police officers on August 7 and after pleading guilty to the offence was released on $1,000 bail with a like surety while a social inquiry report was to be prepared.

However Trott failed to attend appointments at Probation Services and was brought back before the courts.

Bail conditions including a curfew between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and the requirement that he live at home were imposed by Mr. Francis but Trott failed to obey them.

He was remanded in custody on October 27 pending yesterday's hearing.

Mr. Francis told Trott that he would not sentence him immediately as he had another plan.

"I want you to understand this very clearly Angelo. There are only two opportunities open to me right now. One is corrective training which means that you will remain where you are from between nine months to three years.

You don't want that do you?'' Instead Mr. Francis said he would bail Trott with the same conditions that he had imposed before and bring him back to court on November 26.

"I am going to see whether you learned a lesson or not. You are not going to be a 16-year-old boy going by nobody's rules because then you will be out on the street causing everyone problems including me.

"You can now go back to school and we'll see whether or not you are likely to be able to learn and get your act together if I was to release you on probation.''
