A new stage for City Hall in 2009

The stage at City Hall will be replaced in its entirety with a modern, multi-purpose stage and sound system in 2009.

Corporation of Hamilton Secretary Edward Benevides said that provision had been made in the 2009 Budget for this project, but was unable to give further detail as to the amount of money that might be involved.

The new stage will likely be built on the same footprint as the current structure, therefore not requiring any extension to the City Hall building.

"I don't believe we will be extending the building at all," said Mr. Benevides.

He added that the public will also see some other improvements once the project is complete.

"We will take advantage of the opportunity to make a couple of other little enhancements," Mr. Benevides said.

The Corporation hopes to minimise disruption by carrying out the construction during a period when demand for use of the theatre is low, pending selection of the design team.

However, they could not be any more specific with regard to when exactly this might be or how long it might take.

The new stage will be suitable for drama, musical and dance productions as well as presentation and lecture events.
