Annual Gombey Festival on Sunday

City Hall car park will be a whirl of colour on Sunday as several Gombey troupes strut their stuff.

The troupes will be participating in the annual Gombey Festival, which celebrates one of Bermuda's most famous and beloved cultural icons.

Visitors and locals will have the chance to learn about the history of the Gombeys from 'tradition bearer' Janice Warner Tucker as she explains and demonstrates the intricacies of Gombey costume making.

Another highlight of this Gombey Festival is the presentation of an award to a Gombey Folk leader/ The plaque and financial donation is presented to an individual who has been instrumental in furthering the Gombey dance art form.

Minister of Culture Dale Butler said: "Recognising and celebrating the traditions of Bermuda's folk heroes, the Gombeys' are an important tradition which the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs must continue to keep alive and at the forefront of the community."

The festival, which is held annually in October, will start at 3 p.m. and end at 6 p.m.
