Bartender concocts 'Obama' cocktail
A local bartender was so inspired by US President-elect Barack Obama's landslide victory that he created a drink as a tribute to him.
Randolph 'Renny' Rowling, bartender at the Veranda Bar at Elbow Beach, created the red, white and blue drink after President-elect Obama's historic win.
Mr. Rowling, who was voted Bermuda's best bartender in the Bermuda Gold Awards 2007, said: "Barack Obama is such an inspiration. I thought it would be fun to create a tribute to him doing what I do best."
Asked where the idea came from, the bartender said: "It was a few of us talking about the election and Obama winning and I suggested maybe we should make a drink called the Obama drink.
"So I came inside and made this red, white and blue drink and my general manager saw it and liked it."
Mr. Rowling, who has been at the Veranda Bar for 25 years, admitted he first decided on the colours but didn't know what the drink was going to taste like until after he made it.
The drink hasn't actually been put on the menu yet, but Mr. Rowling said it will probably be around for a period of time – if it's a hit with customers.
Asked why he supported Obama, the veteran bartender said: "I mean I'm a Bermudian, I don't get a vote. I think that they need some new blood in there as far as the President is concerned. New blood, New ideas. I should say younger blood."
The Obama will be available at the Veranda Bar until January 20 and is priced at $12.50.
