Belco lineman burned in industrial accident

A Belco employee suffered burns to his left arm after an accident that took place while he was working on high-voltage lines.

A Belco spokesperson said yesterday: "At around 7.43 p.m. Wednesday, Belco dispatch in the company's operation centre was informed a lineman was injured while working on a high voltage line in Warwick with another crew member.

"He was transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for burns to his left arm and released."

The spokesperson said that the company is investigating the cause of the accident.

This is the second workplace accident this month. Last week, a 49-year-old warehouse worker suffered serious head injuries after he lost his footing on a lift.

A spate of workplace accidents earlier this year, two of which were fatal, lead to a new law, passed in July, which threatens on-the-spot fines of up to $1,000 for employees breaching safety regulation.

Digging prompts Cemetery Road closure

Cemetery Road in Pembroke will be closed to pedestrians and motorists from Monday.

Businesses in the area will remain open, although traffic will be banned between Cemetery Lane and Gorham's lumberyard entrance, until November 30.

The road closure is necessary for Belco roadworks.

Businesses at the north end of Cemetery Road can be accessed through St. John's Road while businesses at the south can be accessed from Serpentine Road.

According to a Belco spokesperson, the closure will enable the company to prepare for the installation of new radios in its west power station at the early part of next year.

Belco thanked its neighbours and the public for their cooperation.

Dealer sentenced to six months in prison

A Hamilton Parish man was sentenced to six months in prison at Magistrates' Court yesterday for possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Stephen Knight, 20, of North Shore Road, pleaded guilty to possessing nine plastic twists containing a total of 18.63 grams of cannabis and one additional plastic twist containing 0.26 grams of cannabis on September 14 of this year.

Police entered a home on North Shore Road while searching for a man wanted in connection with another offence.

When they arrived they did not find the man they were looking for but found two Hamilton Parish men, who did not reside in the home, at the property.

According to Police, Knight became "fidgety and nervous" when approached and when he was searched Police then heard a "rustling" noise coming from Mr. Knight's mid-section.

After a further search it was revealed that the noise was coming from a ziploc bag.

When asked about the contents of the bag Mr. Knight admitted that it contained marijuana for sale.

He further admitted that he had paid $500 for the cannabis with the intention of selling it for a $350 profit.

After taking into consideration the defendant's age, his cooperation and early guilty plea, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: "Those who peddle drugs must expect a custodial sentence."

He then sentenced Knight to six months in prison.
