Government is set to hand the Bermuda Land Development Corporation a six-figure bill after it had to reverse roadworks done early this year.

Opposition Senator Kim Swan has blasted the Government for needing to change the road junction at Number Two Gate after giving the BLDC the nod in the first place.

It is thought that more than $100,000 was spent to give priority back to St.

David's Road over Southside Road in St. David's last month after the BLDC had reversed the junction early this year.

But the BLDC said Government had the final say in the original design -- a claim denied by Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott.

He said: "We advised but they went in a quite contrary way.'' Mr. Scott said the Government had problems with the traffic flow being directed off public roads, through BLDC land, and out again because it could have led to complicated liability claims if an accident had occurred.

"BLDC will be required to underwrite the cost of the changes,'' Mr. Scott said. He declined to say how much it had cost.

However further road changes are in the pipeline, meaning the reversal work will be superseded.

BLDC facilities manager Rudy Daniels said the road was originally changed to make it safer.

Cabinet Ministers visited the site and allowed the original change to go ahead -- planning permission was not needed because Southside Road is on BLDC land but Government approval was necessary because the junction change affected St.

David's Road which is a public road.

Mr. Daniels said: "I know Government was involved -- it is a public road and it cannot change without input.

"Engineers from Works and Engineering worked in consultation with BLDC. "I then heard the Premier looked at the junction and made a request to change it.

The change recently was a result of concern from the St. David's community.

They got a petition and presented it to Government.'' And he said there could be a further change down the line which will make the recent reversal obsolete.

He said: "There is a long-term project but the road won't be changed in the immediate future.'' Mr. Daniels said he could not say how much the BLDC had spent on changing the junction.
