California investigates Kevin Brown for 'healthcare fraud'
The eldest son of Premier Ewart Brown, who faces 19 charges of sexually assaulting a number of female patients in an Los Angeles court today, was also being investigated for medical fraud.
Dr. Kevin Brown was arrested on July 8 on suspicion of assaulting an 18-year-old patient in June last year and a female undercover officer who posed as a patient this year.
He was free on bail for $50,000.
Then on Monday, after six more patients – one of them a 15-year-old – came forward with allegations of sexual molestation, Dr. Brown was arrested a second time at his LA home and is now on $4 million bail. Officials worried that he was a flight risk as his father is the Premier of Bermuda.
Now, according to reports in the LA Times, during the yearlong sex-sting operation, Dr. Brown was also under investigation for "multiple healthcare fraud schemes and over-prescription of Oxycodone".
He has not been charged with these offences.
The article goes on to report that state medical fraud investigators have been examining his role in an alleged healthcare fraud scheme and filed an affidavit in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The affidavit also reported that the state Department of Justice suspects Dr. Brown of overprescribing painkillers.
Special Agent J. Timothy Fives of the state Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse unit, is also reported to have discovered Brown's name during a larger investigation of clinics run by people of Russian and Armenian descent.
Today, Dr. Brown, 37, will face the 19 felony counts, including a lewd act on a 15-year-old, rape, sexual battery by fraud and sexual exploitation in the LA county court. These alleged assaults occurred between November 6, 2006, and May 31, 2008. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in state prison.
Apparently, Dr. Brown won notice in LA for organising charity fundraisers at the Playboy Mansion and won Bermuda notoriety recently when the Premier donated three all-expense paid trips to Bermuda in conjunction with Elbow Beach to this effort.
The charity event held in May was for Brown's charity the Urban Health Institute of Los Angeles, which is run out of the same building as Dr. Brown's practice at the Crenshaw Boulevard office in LA.
At least some of the sexual assaults are alleged to have happened at his Crenshaw Boulevard offices.
