Community mourns death of Esme Swan

Esme Swan, a member of the Progressive Group and widow of the first Minister of Youth and Sport, has died.

Mrs. Swan, along with her late husband, former UBP MP Lancelot Swan, was awarded for her work with the Progressive Group in 1999, receiving Queen's Certificates and Badges of Honour.

The Progressive group was responsible for the 1959 theatre boycott, which set into motion the end of segregation in Bermuda.

She was also a well known educator, who taught at West Pembroke School and Prospect Primary School.

Opposition Leader Kim Swan extended his condolences in a statement yesterday, saying: "I was very sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Swan. She was a prominent member of the East End community."
