their guest house bathroom while a man wielding a knife robbed them of cash and jewellery, in the Supreme Court yesterday.

Catherine Showalter, of Montreal, took the stand yesterday following her husband Daniel's testimony on Monday, describing the events that took place on September 6 last year.

Wayne E. Smith, 30, of no fixed abode, has pleaded not guilty to armed robbery on September 6, last year.

However, he pleaded guilty to one charge of burglary at a different address on the same day and another charge of burglary on September 8, 1994.

Mrs. Showalter told how she and her husband returned to their apartment after celebrating her birthday and were getting ready for bed when they heard two loud bangs.

Her husband went to inspect where the noise came from and noticed a bulge in the curtain covering the sliding glass door. When he called out a man holding a knife in the air appeared.

"I was extremely frightened when the intruder came and I only remember that he was black and had a T-Shirt on,'' Mrs. Showalter said.

She added that the defendant demanded to know where their cash was and then ordered her husband into the bathroom.

"I said that I was going to the bathroom too and when inside we locked the door and listened. We later heard noises which made us think the apartment was being searched.'' Mrs. Showalter said the defendant came to the bathroom door and turned the handle to come in but she stood in front of it.

"I didn't want the man to come in but my husband moved me out of the way, opened the door a little and told the man that everything we had was in the camera bag.'' She added that the man later left and the Police were called.

Earlier, while being cross-examined by lawyer Mr. Archie Warner, Daniel Showalter said he had told the Police inspector supervising the identification parade that he was not sure which man it was.

On Monday, Showalter said the defendant warned the couple that an armed accomplice was waiting outside and told them to wait in the bathroom while he searched the apartment.

The Showalters lost gold and diamond engagement and wedding rings, worth $4,800 Canadian dollars, and a College signet ring, worth $200 Canadian dollars, were missing.
