Christmas Day road smash.

The 32-year-old Pembroke man crashed through the windscreen of a car after the vehicle and his bike were in collision.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. at the junction of Cedar Avenue and Laffan Street in Hamilton.

The cycle rider -- who has not been named by Police -- was rushed to the King Edward Hospital suffering from head injuries and two broken legs.

A hospital spokeswoman last night said the man was "stable'' in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Both vehicles were badly damaged in the accident, but the car driver, a 39-year-old man, also from Pembroke, suffered only a cut above an eye.

And in the early hours of yesterday morning a 27-year-old guest worker was seriously injured after falling down a nine feet hole in the garden of a friend's house in Sunrise Drive, Hamilton Parish.

The man, who has not been named by Police, suffered serious head injuries in the accident, which happened 3.30 a.m. on Boxing Day.

A spokeswoman for the King Edward Hospital last night described the man's condition as "stable''.

An airline passenger also had an unexpected Christmas Day stopover on the Island.

A Police spokesman said a British Airways flight en route from Orlando, Florida, to London Gatwick, diverted to Bermuda after a 25-year-old woman passenger took ill.

The woman was taken to the King Edward Hospital and later released after treatment and spent Christmas Day in the home of British Airways employee on the Island.

A spokeswoman for BA declined to confirm the passenger's details, but she said: "Our ground staff showed real Bermudian hospitality and exemplified the caring approach of the airline.

"It was typical of our staff to make that kind of goodwill gesture.'' Police officers also dealt with a total of nine break-ins over the four-day holiday break-in.

The Apothecary in Smith's Parish was broken into and a small fire was started on the premises, but little damage was done. Police, alerted by a burglar alarm, attended. A 33-year-old Warwick man has been arrested in connection with an alleged incident.

A clothes shop on Angle Street, in north Hamilton, was broken into in the early hours of yesterday morning. An unknown quantity of clothes were stolen.

A brand-new 13-inch TV set was taken after raiders struck at a house in Camp Hill, Warwick, sometime between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Police also dealt with three assaults. A 25-year-old Pembroke man was arrested in connection with an alleged assault on two children around 10.45 p.m. on Christmas night at a house in Sandys Parish.

There were a total of 16 domestic complaints and 10 complaints of stealing.

Three alleged drinks drivers were also arrested over the holiday period, down on last year's figures for the same period.

A total of 14 cycles, also down on last year, were stolen, while three alleged shoplifters were taken into custody.

Two children reported missing turned up safely and there was one complaint of noise from a Christmas party.

A Police spokesman said: "It was quite a busy holiday period. But everybody coped very well.''
