Representatives of the hundreds of St. David's Island residents who signed a petition against the plans will be given a chance to speak.

Local Progressive Labour Party MP Arthur Pitcher has the contract to build the homes for Bermuda Housing Corporation.

Mr. Pitcher is embroiled in controversy after it was revealed he was ordered to stop demolishing the asbestos-ridden buildings on the Texas Road site before the hazardous material was treated.

He also admitted he started work on some of the homes before he had been granted planning permission.

St. David's residents claimed they have been kept in the dark by Mr. Pitcher and fellow St. George's South PLP MP Rev. Wilbur Lowe about the plans by BHC to build the houses for rent to low income families.

Residents were shown detailed plans of the complex for the first time after planning permission in principle had been granted.

The residents object to the fact that one fifth of BHC's planned 100 affordable houses are being built on one site at Southside.

Their petition states that in the development plan for the former military bases, the area was designated for community use.

St. David's resident Lawrence Fox, who will address a meeting today at BIU headquarters in Hamilton, said yesterday: "I will definitely be speaking because I have several questions that need answers.
