Double attack charged man likely to miss his child's birth overseas

A man accused of attacking the same person twice in two days faces missing the birth of his baby overseas due to his bail restrictions.

Devon Hewey, 21, is charged with assaulting Derrick Astwood on April 15 in Pembroke parish. Two days later, he's alleged to have burgled a premises in Marsh Folly Road Pembroke and inflicted actual bodily harm on Mr. Astwood while armed with a machete.

Hewey, of Palmetto Road, Devonshire, was not required to enter a plea during his appearance yesterday at Magistrates' Court as the matter must be dealt with at Supreme Court.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said she did not object to him being bailed. However, she told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that Hewey's girlfriend is expecting a baby and plans to fly to the UK to deliver it. For this reason, she asked that Hewey be made to surrender his travel documents.

Granting Hewey $15,000 bail, Mr. Warner made that order along with one that Hewey report to Hamilton Police Station three times per week. He must come back to Magistrates' Court for an administrative hearing in two weeks.
