Drink-driver raced away at 90 kph

A man who led Police on a vehicle chase at over 90 kph while almost double the alcohol limit has been banned from the roads.

Police spotted Conrad Simmons around 8.55 p.m. on June 6 last year when they were conducting laser speed checks on North Shore Road, Pembroke.

According to prosecutor Paula Tyndale, his car was travelling west at 60 kph at the time. When the Police tried to stop him outside Tynes Bay incinerator he sped off, heading west.

Ms Tyndale told Magistrates' Court Simmons ignored Police car lights and sirens, and was travelling at over 90 kph.

"He overtook motorists on a corner and almost lost control a number of times," she explained.

Simmons eventually stopped at Langton Hill, got out of his car and "stumbled" towards the Police, smelling of alcohol.

Asked if he'd been drinking, he told the Police: "Yeah, I've had one or two beers."

A breath-test showed him to have 151mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath, when the legal limit is 80 mg. Computer checks revealed what Ms Tyndale described as "a number of issues with his licence".

Simmons, 53, of Sunset Pass, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired, failing to stop for the Police and having no vehicle licence. He explained what happened that day, and why he ended up being arrested on a warrant and brought to court after failing to appear on a November date.

"I had one or two beers after work in St. George's. I was working on Club Med and had one or two beers before they had imploded it. I didn't come to court because I was incarcerated because I didn't pay the fine from before, from last year,' he told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.

Simmons did not explain the circumstances of the previous fine. This time around, Mr. Warner meted out $2,050 in fines, eight demerit points and a 12-month ban from driving. Simmons faces jail if he does not pay up.

He denied a further charge of having no third party insurance, and was told to bring his documents to court to prove he had the required coverage on Friday.
